Susie Blue and the Lonesome Fellas, “Waitin’ Just For You” (2019): One Track Mind
You know you’re in for a treat when Solitaire Miles returns to her Susie Blue persona. Now, as a prelude to Valentine’s Day, she’s back with the Chicagoland-based Lonesome Fellas to tug once again at the heart string.
Written by Carolyn Leigh and Henry B. Glover, “Waiting Just For You” is a perfect platform for Susie Blue’s jazzy Western swing music. Miles’ harmonies with vocalist Saalik Ahmad Ziyad are tender, evocative and yearning. The timbre and feel of the vocals could have come out of a time capsule.
Of course, the recording of Susie Blue’ vocals and the stellar Lonesome Fellas instrumentation is clear and as precise as this playing. Eric Schneider delivers an excellent, crying-in-your-beer tenor solo, which is matched by the sympathetic rhythm section and the guitar-and-piano interaction.
“Waitin’ Just For You,” available now at Bandcamp, is a perfect reminder of the power and grace of Susie Blue and the Lonesome Fellas and a terrific prelude to their second full-length album.
