Toto, “Mad About You” from ‘Mindfields’ (1999): Toto Tuesdays

“Mad About You” marks the return to former – and future – Toto frontman Joseph Williams, at least in spirit. The song, written by David Paich and Williams, could have easily fit on 1986’s Fahrenheit or 1988’s The Seventh One albums. It has a melodic hook which is aptly supported by Steve Lukather’s guitars. 

Simon Phillips provides the song’s biggest sparks with his subtle snare intro and in-the-pocket groove with Mike Porcaro’s bass. There are other touches of Toto’s past here too, with percussion by Lenny Castro and Richard Page’s backing vocal. 

Yet, for all its charm, “Mad About You” comes up short. Bobby Kimball’s lead vocal seems to lack the finesse that this track requires, and David Paich’s piano is given little that’s of interest to do. 

Perhaps the song’s biggest failing is that it follows “Last Love” on 1999’s Mindfields, which almost makes “Mad About You” feel like filler.
