Toto: “Let It Go” from Falling in Between (2006)

Totally Toto: “Let It Go” from Falling in Between (2006)

“Staring death between the eyes
Doesn't seem so far away
So much pain in long goodbyes
There is much I need to say

You've been shadowing my door
A tempest wind that never dies
Every sorrow washed ashore
No more tears to fill my eyes

Grounded, and succinct lyrics, aggressive and taunt rhythm and progressive rock underpinnings all lead to “Let it Go” being my favorite deep cut from Toto’s 2006 release, Falling In Between. The song, written by the entire band if the only song in the catalog which features a lead vocal by keyboardist Greg Philliganes. Phiiliganes rises to the challenges with a powerfully expressive take on the lyrics, pulling in R&B and rock flavors to move the song forward. The production is what you expect from Toto, first rate and the engineering, by drummer Simon Phillips rises to the challenge, with a bright clear sound, similar to the work of George Massenburg’s work for the Seventh One album. Phillips groove with Mike Porcaro further supports the soul meets prof rock feel. Phillinganes and David Paich bring in synthesizers, electric and acoustic pianos to add nuance to the rhythm track while Steve Lukather’s voice is most prominent in the backing vocals mix.

Lukather’s ‘C-section’ solo even hints of David Gilmour era Pink Floyd.  “Let It Go” always amazes and shows just versatile Toto was.
