Short Tracks: Nick Finzer- Legacy: A Centennial Celebration of J.J. Johnson (2024)

Nick Finzer continues to further his craft with his latest Outside In Music release, ‘Legacy’. The album, a recognition of J.J. Johnson features some of the trombone legend’s original sidemen such as bassist Rufus Reid, drummer Lewis Nash, and pianist Renee Rosnes. While the album features a plethora of Johnson compositions,  Finzer originals, and songs from Johnson’s songbook, Finzer a diligent student of jazz as well as a professor leads the band through a series of thrilling performances, all captured at the Rudy Van Gelder studio.

“Say When” a delightful opening track, is buoyed by the rhythm section, enhanced by there power and subtlety. Finzer handles the song’s familiar them with aplomb before his moving solos which seem to have inspired Rosnes piano solo.

“Lament”, a Johnson staple shines in this setting. The ballad glides forward with evocative piano work by Rosnes, subtle brush work by Nashville and lyrical lines by Finzer. Not a recreation of the original, but retaining the musical themes which made the song so powerful “Lament” is an emotive gem.

Pianist Rosnes originally composed “Malaga Moon” for Johnson. In this setting the quartet adds nuance and emotion to the song which was originally recorded by Johnson with an orchestra. Finzer’s tone enlivens the melancholy of the song, creating a glacial feel while allowing space for Reid and Nash provide subtle but effecting rhythmic backing. Rosnes’ understated but appropriate piano touches are also a highlight.

‘Legacy: A Centennial Celebration of JJ Johnson is available now for preorder via the on-line retailers and digitally. Finzer is also taking preorders for the vinyl pressing. One listen to songs like “Shortcake” and you’ll not only want this tribute album but  will seek of J.J. Johnson’s original recordings.
